ABOUT ME
I’m Dr. Dua Özsoylu, a dedicated researcher and innovator based in Jülich, Germany, specializing in the development of advanced sensor technologies and bioanalytical systems. With a robust background in biomedical engineering and nanotechnology, I have built my career around blending fundamental scientific research with hands-on technological innovation.

From my early academic days to my current role as a Postdoctoral Researcher at FH Aachen, my journey has been driven by a passion for improving sensor technologies for real-world applications. My expertise spans across cleanroom operations—where I have mastered direct laser writing systems (such as Picomaster), nano-imprinting, soft-lithography, and a range of deposition techniques (including CVD, PVD, and ECD)—to the intricate processes of etching, lift-off, and photolithography. This technical proficiency is complemented by my extensive experience in operating state-of-the-art characterization tools like SEM, AFM, and impedance analyzers that are essential in pushing the boundaries of biosensor performance.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
-
Cleanroom Operations & Microfabrication:
I have significant hands-on experience in cleanroom environments, working with advanced systems and techniques that are fundamental to modern microfabrication. My skills include precise pattern design using CAD and KLayout, essential for developing robust microfabrication workflows. -
Biosensor & Microfluidic Device Development:
Specializing in (bio)sensor integration, I design, develop, and characterize sensors both in photonic and electrochemical formats. I possess specialized knowledge in surface functionalization techniques—ranging from plasma treatments and chemical etching to the application of covalent coatings via methods like APTES/GA chemistry—which directly contribute to enhanced sensor performance and reliable biointerface optimization. -
Analytical Instrumentation & Characterization:
My work routinely involves a variety of analytical instruments—UV-Vis/NIR spectrometers, impedance analyzers, contact angle goniometers, and profilometers—to ensure that the sensors not only perform as intended but also meet the highest standards of precision and reliability. -
Project Leadership and Research Management:
I have successfully led the R&D and sensor fabrication parts of multidisciplinary projects, including spearheading the EU/BMBF-funded ARENA project, where my role focused on coordinating sensor fabrication, quality assurance, and integrating field applications. Currently, I am leading a BMWK-funded project, collaborating with a talented student team to drive the next generation of sensor development through intensive industry-academia partnerships.
ACADEMIC BACKROUND AND RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS
I earned my Ph.D. through a joint program between FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences and Dokuz Eylül University, where I gained a deep understanding of nano- and biotechnologies, biomedical engineering, and medical biology. This rigorous academic training set the stage for my active involvement in high-impact research, as reflected in my publications in leading peer-reviewed journals. My work on biosensor innovation—ranging from template bacteria-free sensor fabrication to advanced microfluidic-based chip design—has contributed to significant advancements in early pathogen detection and environmental monitoring.
Throughout my career, I have presented my findings at prestigious conferences such as the World Congress on Biosensors and the European Biosensor Conference, further contributing to the global discourse on sensor technology. These engagements not only underscore my commitment to research excellence but also highlight my role as a thought leader in the field.
AWARDS, HONORS & INDUSTRY ANGAGEMENTS
My professional journey has been recognized through various honors and awards. I have received awards including the Best Poster Award at the AquaticPollutants Final Conference (2024) and at the Dresdner Sensor-Symposium (2021), as well as travel grants and research scholarships funded by prominent organizations such as TÜBİTAK. These recognitions reflect my commitment to innovation, quality research, and continual learning in the rapidly evolving domain of sensor technology.
LOOKING AHEAD
I remain passionately engaged in advancing sensor technologies and exploring innovative applications that bridge the gap between academic research and practical, industrial deployment. Whether through groundbreaking academic research, hands-on engineering in state-of-the-art cleanroom settings, or dynamic leadership in multidisciplinary projects, my goal is to contribute solutions that are both scientifically robust and capable of real-world impact.
